English
is very important today, because English is one of international languages and
it plays an important role as means of communication which people need in
social interaction. There are several factors that might influence success in
learning a foreign language. One of the factors is motivation. Motivation has
been supposed the main factor that gives strong influence on the success of the
students’ learning because motivation is very important in improving student
achievement. Based on the motivation, learning strategy is another’s factor
that can make students’ learning easier,
faster, more enjoyable, more effective, and more transferable to new
situation in order to improve their English ability.
This
study aimed to find out whether there is a significant correlation among
motivation, leaning strategies, and English achievement at the first year
students of SMK plus AL MAARIF Singosari Malang. This study uses a correlation
design and has three variables, namely: motivation, leaning strategies, and
English achievement. This study was conducted at first year students of SMK
plus Al MAARIF Singosari Malang. The samples were 36 students who were selected
randomly from the population of 96 students of first year of SMK plus AL MAARIF
Singosari Malang. Meanwhile, the instruments to collect data are questionnaire
and document. The questionnaire was used to collect data of students’
motivation and leaning strategies, while the document was from English teacher.
The
writer analyzed the data by using correlation research design and the type of
this correlation research is multiple correlation and F-testing hypothesis. The
result of computation shows that the coefficient correlation from correlation among
students’ motivation, leaning strategies and English achievement (R) is 0.123
and the computing of the value of F (2.346) is lower than critical value of F
(43.30) at 0.05 in the level significance. It means that the alternative
hypothesis is rejected. Thus, the study found that there is not significant
correlation among students’ motivation, learning strategies, and English
achievement.
It can be concluded that there is no significant
correlation among motivation, learning strategies and English achievement at
first year students of SMK plus AL MAARIF Singosari. Therefore, the researcher
suggested to the English teacher to help the students find the effective
factors in teaching and learning process, in order to increase students’
English achievement, the students should improve the motivation and
strategies in learning English and increase their attitude, attention if they
want to have a good mastery of English, and for further researcher to add the
